Poor diet is the most common preventable cause of death in people aged 65 or older. It is responsible for more deaths globally than tobacco, high blood pressure or any other health risk. Most diet-related deaths are caused by eating too much sodium and not enough whole grains and fruit.

There has been a rise of health-promoting mobile apps in recent years including apps to promote healthier diets. However, most mobile health apps are not developed for older users, do not support information exchange with clinicians, and have yet to undergo a rigorous evaluation.
