The Very Best of Prince is a greatest hits album by American recording artist Prince. It was released on July 31, 2001, by Warner Bros. Records. The album contains most of his commercially successful singles from 1979 to 1991 including the US number 1s "When Doves Cry", "Let's Go Crazy", "Kiss" and "Cream".
The Very Best of Prince does not include the US number 1 hit "Batdance" most likely due to the licensing of the character Batman. Music critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine believed that the Batman album was unofficially being written out of Prince's discography.[1] All the songs included in this compilation were all previously included in the 3-disc box set The Hits/The B-Sides (1993), with the exception of "Money Don't Matter 2 Night".

On the chart dated August 18, 2001, The Very Best of Prince debuted at number 66 on the US Billboard 200.[5] As of September 21, 2004, the album was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for selling 1 million copies in the United States.[6]
The Very Best of Prince sold 179,000 album-equivalent units (100,000 in pure album sales) in the week following Prince's death,[7] thus allowing the album to re-enter the Billboard 200 at number one; this makes the album Prince's fifth number-one on the chart.[8] The following week the album fell to number two on the Billboard 200 chart, selling 391,000 equivalent copies (216,000 in pure album sales) behind Beyonc's Lemonade.[9] In 2016, the album has sold 660,000 recognized copies in the United States in addition to the over 2 million copies sold prior to 2016.[10]
The album debuted on the Billboard 200 on November 8, 2003, at number 3, with 162,000 copies sold. It spent 62 weeks on the chart. The album was certified and awarded gold, platinum, and double platinum records by the RIAA on December 17, 2003, and on December 13, 2004, it achieved triple platinum status. The album has sold over 5 million units in the United States.[5]
As of December 2007, it has spent over 325 weeks in the Irish Album Charts, effectively not having left the chart since its release. In the UK the album (as The Complete Greatest Hits) entered the charts on November 1, 2003, at its initial number 27 peak position, the album did however re-enter the charts in June 2006 when it peaked at number 9 on the UK Albums Chart.

"I don't think it was necessary for him to do that kind of album," Richards told an Australian newspaper at the time. "Making a solo's fine by me. But apart from the timing of it being a little screwed up, I thought it'd be something he couldn't do with the Stones, rather than an obviously commercial rock 'n' roll album. If it was Irish folk songs with a lady harpist I would have respected it."
"It's all him playing," he said. "All him drumming. There's no vocals. So I said, 'Well, I thought we were going to write a song?' He said, `Now you have to write the lyrics for the song.' He completely finished it and then we got to write. It was a very odd way of doing it. Actually, it worked out. It was fantastic in the end."
