Latin 1

I noticed that it was not uncommon for students to feel discouraged and anxious in front of the amount of vocabulary and grammar rules to memorize; in those cases, I found it useful to send my students motivational memes and images, which served the purpose of cheering the students up while at the same time motivating them to continue the study of the Latin language.

The Latin Advent Calendar

For the Holidays Break, I found that introducing a fun and interactive activity in class helped with the students’ morale and motivation to continue their study of the Latin language; for this reason, I created a Latin Advent Calendar, replacing each chocolate with a Latin sentence that the students would pick and had to translate (either English to Latin or Latin to English). This simple activity turned a mnemonic practice into a fun game for the class.

A beloved group activity asked the students to invent stories based on drawings I made, and a handful of Latin nouns, adjectives, or verbs that they could choose from to create their story. As part of this activity, the students worked in small groups to create a short narrative based on images and limited text. This group activity was extremely useful and successful in helping the students practice the grammar and syntax rules they had memorized in a fun and relaxed environment, where they could also employ freely their creativity and inventiveness.

In my experience, one of the students’ favorite interactive games to practice their knowledge of the Latin language has been Latin Jeopardy! I used PowerPoint to project the game on a whiteboard, and the students played in teams to win the game. I used a simple template for the game, which I filled with specific questions that reflected the students’ level in class and the vocab list they had to practice for that particular week.
