"Detecting and interpreting smells."
The special children at ASHA KIRANA, Chandapura, Special School joyfully organized Olfactory Perception Day on 16th July 2025, focusing on enhancing the sensory development of children with intellectual disabilities. The event was graced by the presence of our Vice Principal Mrs.Joyce Soares, Amardeep Society Secretary, Sister Beena Chirackal SCN, and Sister Sophia Kalapurackal SCN, who wholeheartedly encouraged and supported the children throughout the event.
The celebration aimed at engaging and stimulating the sense of smell, a vital part of sensory development. Six distinct scent categories were introduced: floral, fruity, woody, oriental, fresh, and pungent. Carefully chosen natural materials and items were used to represent each scent.
The children actively participated in identifying and enjoying the different aromas, showing great enthusiasm and curiosity. Their joyful engagement was a testament to the success of the event. This sensory-based activity helped in promoting cognitive development, sensory awareness, and emotional well-being.
Olfactory Perception Day was indeed a meaningful and enriching experience, reinforcing the significance of sensory exploration in the holistic development of children with special needs.Â
