Lamp Sockets: Generally there are two types of popular lamp sockets Medium "standard" (or E26 / E27) and Candelabra (E12).
A standard (medium) metal lamp socket has a 1 inch inside diameter.
A candelabra socket has a 7/16 inside diameter.
The outer diameter of any socket will depend on the type of socket. Metal will be the thinnest and plastic or phenolic with be the biggest, you can also have ceramic sockets.
Standard (medium) sockets are listed E26 (for 120v) or E27 (240 v) yes they are metric sizes but standard bulbs will fit either socket.
Metal lamp sockets use a cardboard or paper insulator 1/16 or 1/32 thick that is installed between the switch and the metal cover. These keep the clamp screws and wire from contacting the cover.
Sockets can include a switch either push / push , twist, on /off or three way internal or external or pull chain or they can be keyless (no switch). A keyless socket would be used for a ceiling light or a lamp that uses a thumb switch or some kind of an external switch.
All of the standard medium sockets we have used measure 27 mm on the outside so I do not know if I have ever seen an 26 mm socket or if I did I did not notice that it was smaller.
