The intention of this unit is to teach empathy through hard history and to prioritize the voices of survivors of genocide. Students will be able to explore and answer the unit's essential question, “What are the implications of using the term ‘genocide’?
Formative assessments for this unit include image and source analysis activities. The summative assessment requires students to record a podcast based on their class research, engaging with more higher order thinking and practice than a traditional end of unit test would allow.
Students get to perform a source analysis of memorials in Lesson 5. This PowerPoint includes the process of analysis as well as images of these memorials. Memorials are often accepted at face value as history, and students will walk away from this lesson with the understanding of how memorials are created and their various purposes related to memory and reconciliation.
