in Belantih, Bali

we do farm,

roast and brew

Old Friends Coffee was estabished by I Made Sipil and his wife.

I Made Sipil grew up working on his family's farm.

They lived a really simple life surrounded by beautiful mountains in Belantih, Kintamani in Bali.

As the coffee market was developing on the Kintamani plateauaz in the 1980s,

the prices were low. Growing and harvesting coffee were not worthwhile

for many farmers in the region.

To this day, the status of farmers in Bali remains low,

while tourism dominates the economy.

Upon graduating high school he moved from his village to started working in tourism.

This was an opportunity to make quick cash and learn English. It was valuable experience.

Nonetheless, He started feeling a sense of discontent and disparity

as he witnessed more hotels and shopping malls being built.

The booming tourism industry created more traffic and pollution,

and caused land prices to skyrocket.

Tragically many farmers have been forced to sell their farms.

Most Balinese, including himself, are Hindu.

According to Hindu philosophy, happiness comes from a good relationship

with God, others and the environment.

He realized his dissatisfaction with working in tourism was the result of an imbalance

between these three elements.

Simultaneously he has come to understand the joy of cultivating and farming the land

where he grew up - he is proud to share the fruits of the earth.

Consequently, Old Friends Coffee was born.

We would like to deliver " tiny happiness" to you and do so as directly as possible.

Your happiness and satisfaction brings them gratification.

In time, we hope this will encourage other young people to farm proudly,

and will help to boost the farming industry in Bali.
