Class Ground Rules
Read all the assignments before class.
Keep yourself on mute unless called on.
Raise your hands electronically.
Focus your comments only on the question at hand rather than straying to other parts of the story.

Discuss the author's story, not your own story.
Try to support your comments by referring to details from the text.
Listen to and respond to others with respect.
"You know, for me, a positive ending is a moment of grace or that moment when a character comes to a threshold and sees everything differently or there's recognition and acceptance. This is the way it is, you know, and with that clarity, I think we do have the opportunity to turn it in another direction. I see it as hopeful or even if that's where the person's life ends, there's something very positive in awareness and coming to terms with where it is.” — Jill McCorkle
READ (at least twice): Jill McCorkle – “Commandments" pp. 55-70.
A group of women meet monthly to discuss their shared experience of being wooed and then cruelly dumped by the same man.
Think About:
Describe the women who meet for lunch. Why do they meet? How would you characterize their conversations with each other? What do they value?
What is the man they all dated like? How did he treat them? Why do they seem fixated on him?
Describe Candy. How does she contrast with these women? What does she value?
Analyze the significance of Candy's tattoos in the story. How do they function as a narrative device and what do they reveal about her character?
What is the significance of the title "Commandments"?
Think about the transformation of the women's perspective by the end of the story. What realizations do they come to, and what questions are they left with?
How would you characterize the narration? How do you think it suits this story?
