The idea of "memes" actually predates the internet and social media! The term was coined in 1976 by the British evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins in his book The Selfish Gene. He used "meme" to describe an idea, behavior, or style that spreads from person to person within a culture, similar to how genes spread biological traits. Dawkins argued that cultural elements like language, fashion, and music evolve and propagate like genes do, with the most successful ones being those that are best able to replicate and spread.

However, internet memes, the viral images, videos, and text we know today, didn't really take off until the 2000s, when meme culture became part of online communities. Early internet forums and websites like 4chan, Reddit, and MySpace saw the rise of meme formats—often involving humor, satire, and absurdity—that could easily spread and evolve. The humor, as you know, often depends on shared knowledge and in-jokes, and these memes tend to mutate, remix, and take on new meanings over time.

So, while Dawkins' meme was about the transmission of cultural ideas, internet memes took that concept and applied it to digital media, allowing for a faster, more immediate spread of ideas, often with a humorous twist.

Do you have a favorite meme that you find particularly funny or clever?
