Abstract
An investigation is made of the generation of ultrashort pulses in a ring laser in the presence of intracavity nonlinear losses due to stimulated Raman scattering. A numerical analysis of the attractors of the problem is used in a study of typical lasing regimes: stable, unstable regular, and unstable irregular (optical turbulence). A change in the nonlinearity parameter reveals also "intermittence" regions. An analysis is made of the influence of feedback provided by the Stokes radiation on the localization of an instability region.

Beams of light interacting with nonlinear-optical materials naturally form complex transverse profiles. Self-focusing, filamentation, modulational instabilities, spontaneous pattern formation and symmetry breaking, nonlinear waveguiding, and transverse mode excitation are but some of the many phenomena that are observed in lasers, in optical bistability, and in the free interaction of beams. As an introduction to a special issue of the Journal of the Optical Society of America B on transverse effects in nonlinear-optical systems, we provide this overview of history and current work.

The trapped atomic cloud irradiated by two
counter-propagating δω frequency detuned Laguerre-Gaussian optical
vortices with opposite angular momenta ±ℓ¯h is considered . When
period of spatial modulation λ/2 and LG carrier frequency detuning δω
are in resonance with dispersion curve ǫ(p) the acoustical vortices
carrying orbital angular momentum are expected to occur . The
experimentally accessible range of λ and δω 8 is analyzed from the
pointview of direct measurements of the excitation spectrum ǫ(p) .
