About

Open Knowledge Sweden (OKS) is a non-profit organisation founded in 2014. OKS currently works on open data, public sector information (PSI) and political integrity. We carry out research and policy-related work and are trying to create a community of activists, civic and public sector organisations, and other change agents to make the most of data and technology for public good.

OKS has in May 2020 endorsed the International Open Data Charter and is taking part of its Implementation Working Group.

Our work

OPEN PROCUREMENT: In April 2020, OKS received a civic tech grant from Vinnova, Sweden’s innovation agency. These funds will support the Open Procurement project. The Open Procurement project aims to facilitate release and reuse of public data. The project will develop a platform to make procurement easier, more transparent and efficient. We will use the internationally tested School of Data-model to involve stakeholders (journalists, companies, civil servants) in the platform development and to coach them in harvesting and visualising data.

OPEN DATA FOR POLITICAL INTEGRITY: In the past, we have worked in the framework of projects funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers, together with partners from Transparency International in Latvia and Lithuania we have recently concluded a project aimed at promoting the use of open data for anti-corruption purposes in the Nordics and Baltics.

OPEN E-GOVERNMENT: OKS has between 2016-2018 received funding from the EU’s Horizon 2020 programme, in the framework pan-European CLARITY project. CLARITY supported the EU Member States in their pursuit for greater trust, transparency, and efficiency within their open e-Government initiatives and highlighted best practices within this field. Clarity also mobilised a multidisciplinary network of stakeholders to conduct an interactive needs assessment and gap analysis in order to support the growth of innovative solutions for open government in Europe. The results were developed into a blueprint for next steps in facilitating open government initiatives in Europe.

FREEDOM OF INFORMATION: OKS has also developed and launched the first Freedom of Information- website in Sweden (FragaStaten.se) and has run several rounds of Open Knowledge Awards to acknowledge people and organisations that are working towards open knowledge in Sweden.
