Their first concert took place in front of the Lviv Opera Theatre on 14 January 1995. Shortly after that appearance they released a demo tape called 'DEMO 94-95'. In 1995 they also participated for the first time in the two biggest (at the time) Ukrainian music festivals - Chervona Ruta and Melodiya, also participated in Is, a personal project of Lviv musician Oleg Sook, performed the song Long time ago.[3]

The band's big break came in 1998, when they made the decision to move to Kyiv. There they started working on their first album Tam, de nas nema ("There, where we are not"). The group's first music video was recorded for the song "Tam, de nas nema". This video was the first piece of modern Ukrainian music to make its mark on MTV Russia, as well as France's MCM Channel.

At the very beginning of 1999, Okean Elzy started working on their second album Ya na nebi buv ("I was in the sky"). In May the group decided to try to expand their fan base into Russia. Their first concert was at the festival Maxidrom. There were thousands of people there who already knew their songs, with many singing along.

During the Football World Cup 2006 in Germany, Okean Elzy actively supported the Ukrainian national team and cheered the fans with their songs. The last song of the band called Veseli, brate, chasy nastaly... ("Oh, brother, merry times came...") made a huge splash in Ukraine. The song and the video were released as a single and all profits were donated to the child care center treating AIDS. Charity activities play a major role in OE's life.

I always wondered how unusual it would be for any nation, whose native language is English, to listen to foreign music, because most of the songs that I always listened to were English-speaking and it took me a long time until I actually realized what they were singing about without asking for help from Google translate.

Many people want me to write songs, and I see other musicians doing it. But I never write for a purpose, I only write when my heart starts talking. and right now, my heart is busy with those who need help. But I do know for sure that art is a sublimation of stress and emotions, and I feel so much of that now that I am expecting to write something soon.

P.S. If anyone knows how to reach the children’s choir director, Vasyl Rudenko, please let me know. We are looking for a children’s choir to record the Song Flight theme song, “A World Full of Magic” in Ukrainian. We have the sheet music and Ukrainian translation. Thank you!

Last year, the British band Coldplay was joined by Vakarchuk during a stop on their Music Of The Spheres World Tour in the Belgian capital of Brussels. Vakarchuk joined Coldplay's lead vocalist Chris Martin on stage, and the duo performed Okean Elzy's song "Obiymy (Embrace)," which has become an anti-war anthem for Ukrainians. "Their management just approached us like a couple of weeks before," Vakarchuk explained. "So I came there to Brussels and joined the guys on the stage. It was great moment. I had a couple of minutes to speak and it was really good." Meanwhile, the war has not dampened his creative spirit and is even a source of inspiration for the songwriter. "I'm writing all the time," Vakarchuk said. You know, it's a typical thing for me. So I think I'm very prolific in this. Not necessarily all things are great, but I'm trying to write as much as possible and create songs.

He added, "So some of these songs are definitely attached by the fact that Ukraine now is on war, and, uh, uh, these songs have the top in like the war as their main topic, but, even if they reflect the wartime, they do not necessarily depict literally, the combat or the war itself. "So, the song I'm working on now it's called, "When We Are Together," and it says that it's a pity or it's a shame. There are two of us, but the night is only one. And it means that so many couples are separated, and sometimes, soldiers can come back for a couple of days and just see the wives or beloved for one or two days. So, this suddenly comes to my head right now, and I'm using it to describe what's going on in my country."

The song "911" by Okean Elzy is about finding joy in the small moments of life, like sharing a car ride with a loved one. The chorus emphasizes this idea of togetherness by comparing the number of cars on the road to the number of people in the world, suggesting that there is a divine balance in this connectedness. The reference to "911" stands for an emergency call, but in this context, speaks to a feeling of security, warmth, and most importantly, love in the presence of a special someone. Ultimately, the song is an ode to appreciating the gift of life with a companion, no matter how small or brief the moments are.

Then the band members added a few more songs from their old works and prepared the first musical program. In the winter of 1995, the Okean Elzy group performed in front of a large audience. The musicians were able to win their first "fans", they were greeted with a standing ovation.

In 1999, the group participated in the Russian music festival "Maksidrom". It was held in the sports complex "Olympic". And what was the surprise of the musicians when the audience began to sing the song "There, where we are dumb."
