Dr Nnamdi Nwahara
Research Associate
Royal Society ISPF Project [Nov 2024 - present].
Nnamdi Nwahara is a Medicinal Chemist (PhD) developing next generation theranostic tools at the intersection of nanotechnology and medicine. He joins the Achadu Lab as a Research Associate (Project manager) in Biosensor development. With a background in medicinal chemistry and photochemistry, Dr. Nwahara currently focuses on developing nanomaterial-based immunoassays for disease diagnostics, integrating surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and fluorescence sensing to enhance sensitivity and specificity. His research aims to advance theranostic platforms by combining molecular diagnostics with targeted therapy through innovative biomaterials.
Dr. Abimbola Motunrayo Folami
Research Associate (Visiting)
Dr Folami is a Data Scientist and Visiting Research Associate at the Achadu Lab, School of Health and Life Sciences , Teesside University. She has over 20 years of experience in microbiology, biotechnology, environmental virology, computational and molecular biology and holds a PhD in Biotechnology with a focus on sustainable water treatment, microbial surveillance, bio-nanotechnology, and bioenergy from waste. She has a patent on bionanoparticles target multi-drug resistant bacteria for water purification. She also works on biodegradable films from food waste, anaerobic digestion for biohydrogen and biogas production, as well as machine learning tools for environmental health monitoring. She contributes to scientific publishing as a Guest Editor for Sustainability journal and as a reviewer for several international journals. Dr. Folami is a recipient of a Water Research Commission (WRC) research grant and is widely published, known for her contributions to environmental biotechnology and the circular bioeconomy.
Mr Elizur Lozziilla Gideon
Research Assistant
(RSC Sustainable Lab Grants)
Elizur Lozziilla Gideon holds a Master’s degree in Advanced Biochemistry from the SIPBS, University of Strathclyde. He is a member of both the Royal Society of Biology (RSB) and the Biochemical Society. His research interest is in the industrial application of cutting-edge molecular biology techniques, drug discovery/molecular medicine/ethnopharmacology to solve global issues. He is currently is a Research Assistant at the Achadu Lab, School of Health and Life Sciences of Teesside University. He supports several multinational research projects involving nanomaterial synthesis, characterisation, and bioconjugation to develop viable biosensors and devices for disease diagnostics, elemental/chemical detection, and eco-friendly environmental remediations.

PhD Students
Saba Niaz is a PhD researcher in Biotechnology at Teesside University, undertaking research focused on developing innovative diagnostic strategies for Lyme disease. Her project explores a 3D paper-based CQDs-MIP sensor and an aptamer-SERS platform for the detection of the OspC protein. She holds an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s degree in Nanomedicine for Drug Delivery, completed across several leading European institutions, as well as a Master’s degree in Infectious Diseases from the University of Kent. Saba also holds a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy, which provides her with a solid foundation in biomedical and pharmaceutical sciences.
