Gaia Oikawa is a second-year Ph.D. student in the Graduate School of International Cultural Studies at Tohoku University, Japan. He received his B.A. in Education from Iwate University and his M.A. in International Cultural Studies from Tohoku University. His research interests lie in instructed second language acquisition, particularly vocabulary learning and instruction, with a special focus on the role of learner engagement in vocabulary learning. His recent work has appeared or is forthcoming in TESOL Quarterly, Studies in Second Language Acquisition, International Journal of Applied Linguistics, and TESL-EJ.
