Friday June 12
Owl Prowl at Mosquito Lake
7:30 PM
As dusk settles in, join us for an evening exploration of the campground trails and roads as we listen to the sounds of nightfall. Along the way, we’ll keep our eyes and ears open for a resident pair of barred owls that has called this area home for years. This is a unique opportunity to experience the campground after hours while learning about some of Ohio’s most vocal and fascinating raptors. Who knows—we may even have an owl join us on our walk. The program will begin with a small-group owl pellet dissection, where participants will learn about the ecological value of studying these fascinating clues to an owl’s diet. We will then enjoy a short presentation on the owls of Ohio, followed by a guided hike of no more than three-quarters of a mile, mostly on pavement, as we attempt to call in wild owls for observation.
Location: Mosquito Lake State Park Amphitheater
PLEASE NOTE: Park in the campground over flow parking lot and look for the "Program Event" signs to lead you down the path through the woods to the amphitheater.
Mothing: Discover the Magic of Moths After Dark
9:30 PM to 12:00 AM
Step into the nocturnal world of moths and experience the park in a whole new way during this late-night BioBlitz adventure. Join Nathan Tea, mothing enthusiast, and our naturalist for an evening of “mothing” as we use light and sugar bait stations to attract and observe moths and other nighttime insects up close. Participants will learn how these fascinating creatures are safely attracted, how to identify some of the species we find, and why moths play such an important role as nighttime pollinators in our ecosystems. From tiny geometers to large, showy silk moths, you never know what beautiful or bizarre species might appear once the sun goes down. This program is a great opportunity to slow down, explore the wonders of the night, and take part in the BioBlitz by documenting species that are often overlooked. Bring a flashlight or headlamp, preferably with a red light if possible, along with bug spray and your curiosity for a fun and memorable evening outdoors.
