“Revamping Our Values” by Ms. Prema Fenn
We live in a competitive, materialistic and instant world where values keep changing. ‘Enough is enough’ was the golden saying of the past. But ‘Enough is never enough’ is what the media constantly bombard at us today. Advertisements allure us and the families and we know how the plastic money is spent on wants rather than on needs. Not satisfied with who we are or what we have, we try to find our identity, satisfaction, fulfillment or acceptance in our roles or designations or in what we wear or have. This is where the role of parents/seniors in any culture comes as vital. The children emulate what the parents hold dear as values, principles, disciplines in their personal, family and professional lives. Of course it is also true that children do not always appreciate their parents’ values and principles and may also rebel against their ways.
The materialistic and instant world in which the youngsters live, the peer pressure and wanting to have the freedom to live the way they want will bring in friction between parents and children. Not all the godly parents among graduates and staff workers have been successful in passing on their values to their children. But by and large the prayerful upbringing of the children, teaching informally the values through various means, God-honoring life style, spending time with children however busy they are in their profession, have yielded rich dividends in the lives of children.
I know of a staff worker couple whose children are placed well now. They are grateful to God for the way they were brought up by parents in simple lifestyle. They learnt to give to God since they were small. These values were caught by them rather than being taught formally. These children now respect, love and care for the parents. Some graduates are challenging role models to Staff Workers in their simple lifestyles, sacrificial giving, closely-knit family relationships and involvement in the ministry. Praise God for them.
I come from a family of six children. One of the siblings is no more. Till today whenever we meet together we remember the way our parents brought us up, our happy childhood days, our times together as a family in spite of small and simple beginning of our parents’ lives. We have heard, watched and appreciated the way our parents struggled to educate us, passing on unconsciously by some precious lessons like trusting God for everything, contentment in what we have, not to borrow to live beyond our means, giving to God and to those in need and to forgive others as Christ forgave us. Till today God has been enabling me to put these things into practice in my life, though I find it difficult at times to forgive others. Since the time I left home to join the UESI as a Staff Worker I have not written home for any of my personal needs but had the joy of proving God’s faithfulness in meeting all my needs till today. My family says that UESI is my second home. True, I have greatly been enriched by my association with the UESI over the past nearly 47 years as a graduate, as a Staff Worker and now after retirement as a Field Partner. I have had the privilege of knowing personally all the pioneers and working with some of them - former senior Staff Workers except Dr. John Moody.
UESI has made a big contribution in widening my horizon and understanding of ministry, God, His people, care of individuals, use of money and many other areas. This came through watching, interacting and learning through the life and lifestyle of these pioneers - graduates and Staff Workers. They did not pass on the values through formal teaching but we have caught those values as they practiced them in their lives. Simple living is understood and lived out differently in various places and cultures. UESI members have seen as example, the simple lifestyle of staff workers and graduates over the years. As materialism creeps into our families contentment is out of question. While we enjoy God-given facilities and comforts without feeling guilty, we need to take care that materialism does not dictate terms to us, tempting us to rationalize and justify our actions and ways of living. Simplicity and contentment should mark the life of every believer.
Another area where parents/seniors need to help children and young people is in the area of finding their true identity. When parents themselves find their true identity it is easier to pass on good values and principles to children with confidence. Most of us find it difficult to accept ourselves as God has created us because of the lack of understanding of God and how He created us. Knowing that we are persons of worth will free us, help us to love God, know Him personally and make a valuable contribution to the society and church. The Scripture should be the basis of our true self-worth and not what the media or others say or how we look like. Meditation on Ps 139.13-18 has been a freeing experience for me and helped me to feel more loved and valued by God.
My father saw to it that we all have right self-worth by gently and naturally building on the positive traits in our personality and never showed partiality or compared one child with the other. As a result we grew up as a closely knit family, never ashamed of the humble beginnings of our parents and have imbibed the values passed on to us. My family and the UESI have helped me to rebuild my own value system keeping Scripture as the basis. The respect, support, acceptance, love and care I have received from the UESI and my own supportive family have gone a long way in helping me to enjoy my single life.
‘Rebuilding the walls…’ is the theme of the forth coming OFUESI Conferences. Along with this theme we also need to consider Rebuilding our inner life. Rebuilding our families, rebuilding young people and so on. Let us consider revamping our values as well.
- Prema Fenn
