Meet the Coach

Before she was "Coach Maya", she was an eight-year-old member of First Tee - Central Arkansas, and later went on to play collegiate golf at the NCAA Division II level. She later became, "Miss Freeman" as an impactful first-grade classroom teacher. Originally from Little Rock, Arkansas, Maya graduated from Christian Brothers University in 2018 with a bachelor's degree in English for Corporate Communications and Psychology. Her time as a collegiate athlete, paired with deep community involvement as a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., sparked a lasting passion for empowering girls and women both on and off the course.

After relocating to Houston, Texas through Teach For America, Maya immersed herself in education and earned a Master's in Teaching from Relay Graduate School of Education. Six years in the classroom taught her a lesson that's shaped everything since: support is free. Whether it was tying shoes, talking through hard questions about identity, or simply showing up consistently, she discovered that relationships - not curriculum alone - are what help people believe in themselves.

That same philosophy now drives every lesson at Off the Tee Golfing Club. Maya is a certified LPGA Class A Instructor who holds additional coaching certifications through First Tee Nationals, LPGA*USGA Girls Golf, and the Positive Coaching Alliance — credentials she draws on to develop golfers from the ground up. What if the swing was never the point? For the students she coaches, golf is just the practice field - the real lesson is learning to trust yourself. It's giving each player, whether age 3 or 90, the tools and encouragement to take their game and themselves to the next level.

"I strive to uplift young voices in decision-making processes and hope to inspire the next generation to be the best version of themselves! In all seasons of life, I am most excited about motivating individuals to reach their goals, helping them make new ones, and outstretching those too! In my spare time, I love to EAT, volunteer, travel, spend time in nature, listen to music, and get into anything adventurous!"
