if you're interested in leading a session
if you're interested in attending
(You do not need to come for the whole time!)
The event has an open structure as part symposium, workshop series, and social practice art project. Participants are invited to come and go throughout the day and a specific schedule will be shared closer to the event. An iteration of this project first took place at AUTOMAT Collective in Philadelphia, PA in February 2023.
We are excited to bring this conversation to OTE Arts Gallery on April 6th in Columbus, Ohio to network higher arts educators in Central Ohio. Scheduled programming will include opportunities to build connections and share resources within our community of educators, working artists, and students. Examples may include syllabus sharing, resources for self care / burnout prevention, and workshops on navigating the job market. Office Hours is an invitation for collaboration, connection, and community action.
This project was collaboratively instigated by Elisa Gabor Smith, Lydia Smith, and Britny Wainwright. We invite you to contribute to the programming and collaborate in shaping this project.

12:00 pm – Open Space Technology: Let’s Discuss the Issues You Care About
Equity, accessibility, resource sharing, teaching under the current administration, student engagement, diversity, self care, burnout, work/life balance, the job market, collective action, labor distribution… What do you want to talk about when it comes to higher education and the arts? Open Space Technology is a dynamic, group-moderated method for facilitating complex conversations that can be used both in and out of the classroom. Participants will use this method to discuss issues of higher education in the arts as proposed by participants. Come with issues you wish to discuss and find others to share conversation in small groups. Let’s talk about what we need to talk about. Learn More.
1:00 pm – The Adjuncts Are In (facilitated by Miranda Holmes and Hannah Parrett)
A conversation led by adjunct professors from the Ohio art community on the realities of adjuncting, sharing perspectives on professional capacity, possibilities of connection and community, and alternative academic paths.
2:00 pm – Workshop on Quitting with Laura Larson
What happens if we quit? What are the ways forward outside academia? How can quitting – or saying no – be a form of liberation and care? Participants are invited to consider and ask these questions together.
3:00 PM – People’s Banner Workshop with Migiwa Orimo
The People’s Banner Workshop is an ongoing project facilitated by Migiwa Orimo. The workshop provides free visual aids (banners, signs, props) for direct action, protest rallies, picket lines, and other street actions for social justice. Join for a conversation about working under the current administration(s) while making banners and protest signs.
4:00 PM – Activity: The Long Table Discussion about Arts Education
We will close Office Hours with a long table, a feminist method for group discussion and listening. Participants will annotate a large paper placed on the table with notes from the discussion, imagining ways forward in arts education before we disperse and return to our roles as educators, students, and artists. The Long Table Discussion is an “experimental open public forum that is a hybrid performance installation roundtable discussion dinner party designed to facilitate dialogue through the gathering of people with common interests” developed by Lois Weaver.
5:00 PM – Reception / Closing Office Hours
