Background:  Complaints of the arm, neck and/or shoulders (CANS) in general and computer-related disorders in particular affect millions of computer office workers in Western developed countries. However, with the widespread use of computer systems in developing countries, the associated musculoskeletal complaints are yet to be investigated.

Methods:  In 2005 282 computer office workers at a mobile telecommunication company and three banks in Khartoum, Sudan, received an Arabic language version of the validated Maastricht upper extremity questionnaire (MUEQ). The questionnaire holds 109 items covering demographic characteristics, in addition to six main domains (i.e. work station, body posture, break time, job control, job demands and social support) assessing potential physical and psychosocial risk factors. Forward/backward translation of the MUQE was done independently by two different translators. Prevalence over the past year were computed for CANS. Further, the psychometric properties of the Arabic questionnaire were investigated (i.e. factor structure and reliability) and cross-validation was carried out.

Results:  The response rate of the questionnaire was 88% (n = 250). The one-year prevalence of CANS showed that 53% of the respondents could be classified as mild cases. The highest incidences were found for neck and shoulder symptoms (64% and 41% respectively). The analysis of the psychometric properties of the scale resulted in the identification of 2 factors for each of the 6 domains (i.e. office equipment, computer position, head and body posture, awkward body posture, autonomy, quality of break time, skill discretion, decision authority, time pressure, task complexity, social support, and work flow). The calculation of internal consistency and cross validation provided evidence of reliability and lack of redundancy of items.

Conclusion:  The prevalence of CANS among the targeted population seems to correspond strongly with prevalence of CANS in Western developed countries. The Arabic translation of the MUEQ has satisfactory psychometric properties to be used to assess work-related risk factors for the development of CANS among computer office workers in Sudan.

The Arabic Flagship Program at UMD is an integral part of the Arabic Department. It welcomes UMD students from any major who wish to achieve superior level proficiency in Arabic (both formal register and at least one dialect) and intercultural fluency. In addition to a rigorous academic program, Flagship students take part in a variety of extra-curricular activities, an individual tutoring program, internships, and other professional opportunities. Participation in the Arabic Flagship leads to a capstone year in Meknes, Morocco.

The Arabic and Persian Departments jointly host the UMD Summer Language Institute, which offers an intensive language and culture program. Students participating in the Summer Institute are able to complete a full language level/academic year of Arabic. Three levels are offered in the summer: elementary, intermediate, and advanced.

The Arabic Flagship enables students of any major to reach a professional level of Arabic and advanced intercultural competence by graduation. It consists of a language and culture coursework and co-curricular program at UMD, and a year-long overseas study, leading to Flagship certification. Visit the UMD Arabic Flagship website to learn more.

A suicide bomber driving a minibus blew himself up in front of the Baghdad office of a popular Arabic news station Monday, killing six people and burying a lawmaker alive under the rubble of his collapsed home, police and hospital officials said.

The massive blast blew out windows in the two-story Al-Arabiya building and left much of the interior in shambles, with doors hanging off their frames. The street outside was littered with the smoldering hulks of at least nine cars, including one that appeared to have been hurled by the explosion on top of another vehicle.

Three guards, a driver, a passer-by and a 50-year-old cleaner died in the blast in front of the building, police and hospital officials said. The attack also wounded 16 people, including former deputy prime minister Salam al-Zubaie, who lives nearby. The television company said four people were killed, including the guards and the cleaner.

Iraq has been without new leadership since the March 7 elections failed to produce a clear winner. As politicians bicker, many Iraqis worry that the insurgents are trying to incite more violence in the midst of the power vacuum.

The University of Maryland College of Education will launch a new Arabic language specialization certification for future world language teachers, beginning in the Summer 2024 semester. The program aims to increase the number of Arabic language learners in the state of Maryland by supplying classrooms with more teachers trained in the language.

The program is a collaboration between the College of Education and the School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures in the College of Arts and Humanities, said Clinical Assistant Professor and World Language/Dual Language Program Coordinator Antonio Alejandro Prez Belda.

Prez Belda said he got the idea to push for the inclusion of an Arabic language specialization two years ago when multiple students called his office to ask about a possible program certifying teachers in the language.

In the last five to six years, public schools in Maryland have seen a sharp decrease in Arabic language programs, according to Prez Belda. Only four schools in Maryland currently offer Arabic language courses, but Prez Belda hopes that providing a certification track for Arabic language teachers will revitalize these programs.

The certification is available for the Master of Education program in Curriculum and Instruction, World Languages Education Specialization, with preK-12 teaching certification. Prez Belda said candidates can apply for the program with their graduate school application.
