Rhinoceroses are heavy animals with thick skin and hooves. There are five species, or types, of this mammal. Rhinoceroses are large animals that weigh 3 to 5 tons. They are about 8 to 13 feet long. The animals have long heads. Some have one horn on the top of the head others have two horns. Both the African and the Sumatran rhinoceroses have two horns. Rhinoceroses have thick gray or brown skin. The white rhinoceros is a lighter gray than the others. The only hair on rhinoceroses is at the tip of the tail and on the ears.
Rhinos live in places called grasslands and savannas in Africa and parts of Asia. These are big, open areas with lots of grass, bushes, and trees where rhinos can roam around freely. Some rhinos like grassy areas where they can see everything around them, while others prefer spots with more trees and thick bushes that help them hide. They need places with plenty of water to drink and mud to play in. Different kinds of rhinos live in different regions - some are found in wide-open spaces of countries like Kenya and South Africa, while others live in the forests of places like Indonesia. These areas need to be warm enough for these big animals to feel comfortable.
Rhinos love to eat plants! They spend lots of time munching on grass, leaves, branches, and fruits that grow in their home areas. Some rhinos, like the white rhino, eat grass from the ground. Other rhinos, like the black rhino, can reach up into bushes and trees to grab tasty branches and leaves. They use their special lips to pull plants into their mouths and chew all day long. A rhino can eat hundreds of pounds of plants every single day. They drink lots of water too.
The animals cannot see well, but they have a good sense of hearing and smell. Rhinos can often be seen rolling around in mud, giving themselves a protective 'mud coat’ to keep them cool, stop insects biting and get rid of any parasites. Rhinos are big, strong animals that are good at protecting themselves and their families. If something scary comes near them, they might run fast to scare it away. Mommy rhinos are extra special - they work really hard to keep their baby rhinos safe. Daddy rhinos like to make sure no other rhinos come into their home area.
Rhinos have big, pointy horns that they can use if they need to fight. Even though they look heavy and slow, rhinos can actually run super fast! They can zoom through the forest at almost as fast as a car driving in a neighborhood. If they miss something they're trying to chase, they can quickly turn around and try again.
