Information about the Øresund Seminar in Lund 17/9, 2024

We are happy to announce that the next Øresund Seminar will be held in the early autumn of 2024. It will this time take place in Lund, at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences at Lund University. The lectures will be in the lecture room Hörmander, just to your right when you enter the mathematics department. You can follow this link to find your way to the mathematics department, the entrance is on the east side towards sjön Sjön.

Below is a rough schedule for the day. After the talks, we will go for dinner at Talevskis i Stadsparken. The registration for dinner closed 8/9, but if you had a change of heart send an email to Magnus (see emails below) and we see what can be done.

Title: Fractional Laplacians: a geometric approach and applications

Abstract:

Diffusion processes beyond Brownian motion have recently attracted significant interest from different communities in mathematics, the physical and biological sciences. They are described by nonlocal operators with singular non-integrable kernels, such as fractional Laplacians. The fractional Laplacian is defined via an extension method, as a Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator for a degenerate elliptic differential problem in a half-space of one higher dimension. Detailed and sharp regularity results for associated problems in a bounded domain have been obtained by Gerd Grubb, for both local boundary conditions or exterior conditions. In this talk we motivate these problems, show how techniques from geometric microlocal analysis give an alternative approach and discuss its application to fractional inverse problems and to numerical analysis.

Abstract:

In the last few years a method of approximate bosonization of fermions in dimension > 1 has been developed to approximate the dynamics and spectral properties of such systems. I will give a basic introduction to the method and discuss the results that have been obtained for the ground state energy in the mean field scaling and for strongly interacting particles.

In this presentation, we will provide an overview of the mathematical theory of two-dimensional traveling water waves, with a particular emphasis on the historical development behind waves of greatest height. No specialized background knowledge is required.

Title: Bottom of the spectrum for manifolds foliated by minimal leaves

Abstract:

We give a sharp estimate for the bottom of the spectrum of a Riemannian manifold which is foliated by minimal leaves and transversally negatively curved. Our method also yields an estimate for the bottom of the sub-Riemannian spectrum.
