An Open Educational Resources (OER) Project
My name is Reihaneh (Rei) Samsami. I am a Ph.D., P.E. in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, an Assistant Professor at at the University of New Haven (UNH).
Being a professional in BIM, and building on my teaching experience, I am determined to take further steps and enable the permissions of OER (Retain, Reuse, Revise, Remix and Redistribute) in my BIM course. I am working on enabling interactive content and finally making an open source BIM course, on the pillars of open pedagogy.
"Embedded in the social justice commitment to making college affordable for all students is a related belief that knowledge should not be an elite domain. Knowledge consumption and knowledge creation are not separate but parallel processes, as knowledge is co-constructed, contextualized, cumulative, iterative, and recursive. In this way, Open Pedagogy invites us to focus on how we can increase access to higher education and how we can increase access to knowledge–both its reception and its creation. This is, fundamentally, about the dream of a public learning commons, where learners are empowered to shape the world as they encounter it. "

If it is your first time hearing about OER, it might be difficult to understand it fully. Let me explain it in plain language for you:
Open Educational Resources (OER) refers to freely available educational materials that can be used, shared, and modified by anyone. These resources include textbooks, videos, lesson plans, quizzes, and more. The key aspect of OER is that they are openly licensed, meaning the creators give permission for others to use and adapt their work without cost.
Think of OER as a treasure trove of learning materials that are accessible to everyone, regardless of their financial resources or location. It's like having a library of educational content that can be accessed online. Instead of being restricted to traditional textbooks or expensive resources, OER allows teachers, students, and self-learners to explore a wide range of materials at no cost.
The openness of OER encourages collaboration and creativity. Teachers can customize the resources to suit their specific needs, adding examples, illustrations, or explanations to make the content more engaging for their students. Students can also benefit by accessing various perspectives, interactive materials, and multimedia resources that enhance their learning experience.
By promoting the use of OER, educators and institutions can reduce the financial burden on students who would otherwise have to purchase costly textbooks. OER democratizes education, making high-quality learning materials available to a wider audience and fostering a culture of sharing and innovation in the educational community.
This website by UNH is a great source to become familiar with Open Pedagogy: Link
I am grateful for the Open Pedagogy fellowship provided by UNH. It is furnishing an affordable, flexible, and accessible BIM learning platform for my students.
I am committed to personal development in learning how to bring equitable knowledge into my classroom, and I find the support provided by this fellowship promising.
Last, but not least, I have benefited from working with a knowledgeable mentor, MARY ISBELL, PH.D., and a motivated team on this project. I appreciate the motivation and assistance of all Open Pedagogy mentors.
I have initiated this website in June 2023, by myself, but I am expecting more valuable input from my students and student reviewer (Sonica Karki), during Fall 2023 academic year. I will credit the collaborators on each page's footnote, by their name.
I am always open for collaboration, on this topic or any other topic related to Construction Management.
