On Friday 10/22 a tree crashed into a parking lot portable classroom at Skyline High School. According to veteran faculty there this is the 3rd time in several years a tree has crashed onto a classroom as it fell. The Skyline community is fearful next time someone will be hurt or worse killed. In these times of extreme drought, fire danger, and climate change, OUSD needs to regularly assess tree health and assure the safety and health of its students by removing hazardous trees that pose a danger to the physical health of students and the structures where students learn.
Additionally, Skyline High School has recently experienced a Covid outbreak, with 6 cases identified between 10/19-22. Students and staff are finding this experience to be alarming and unsettling. The sense that conditions have been improving has been called into question and it is now clear that several of the measures that the district is taking are insufficient. Human error and lack of mandatory weekly testing, mask fatigue, sense of invincibility that comes with vaccination, and lack of a consensus about best practices and acceptable threat levels are making the virus difficult to contain. As cold wet weather sets in for the winter, OUSD must address the weak links of its safety plan snd come to the table in good faith with OEA so additional lives are not lost. The time is now to act. Failure to act promptly will lead to unnecessary Covid casualties. Weekly mandatory testing, lunchtime safety, and an extension to Covid leave are critical measures so that our community will weather the rest of this school year in tact and remain focused on improving student learning and wellbeing. -- Skyline staff member
Today 10/7/21 a water main was ruptured around 9 AM by a construction crew. We were stuck on campus until 11:16 with no drinking water, water to wash hands, or flush toilets. It was a dehumanizing experience.
Our school safety measures have been confusing at best. Kids are supposed to eat inside the cafeteria every other seat, however there are not enough seats at each table so they end up sitting next to each other. Teachers can't get soap in their classrooms, and our night-time custodian has been out for the past 3 weeks and classrooms aren't getting cleaned after school. We had an order of PPE (an order placed to the district) that was never received. The district stated that they had delivered the order but no one was there to receive the package so they left it and that we should just order again if it was lost. A week later we received the said package however with far less PPE than expected. We've lost 4 staff members since the beginning of the year, 3 of which were teachers. 1 of these teachers was transferred due to low enrollment and forced us to consolidate our two fifth grade classes into 1. -- Skyline staff member
