The 12 labors of Hercules

A 6th Grade ELA Quest-adventure

My name is Herakles but everybody calls me Hercules!! I am the son of Zeus (yes, you heard right! The father of all the gods!) and Alcmene. My father, before I even born, predicted that when I grew up I would become a famous and strong king! All the gods were very happy with the prediction except Hera, his jealous wife! She immediately suspected that I was his son, so she decided to hurt me!

Her plan was to get me out of the way before I even grew up. So, when I was a baby, she sent two snakes into my crib while I was sleeping. But I was not scared at all! As soon as they approached to bite me, I grabbed them and smothered them with my bare hands! From that day on, everyone knew that I was born a hero.

In my childhood I learned useful arts from the best teachers. I learned to ride, to use weapons, to shoot, to bow and to play music. Near the wise centaur Chiron I learned astrology, botany and how to heal wounds! If you want to learn more about my early years, watch the video to the right.

But Hera never stopped torturing me! To avenge my father Zeus for his adultery, she stricken me with a temporary curse of madness causing me to murder my beautiful wife and my three sons. I would have continued killing if it wasn't for Athena who knocked me out with a stone! When I woke up, I was, and still am, overwhelmed with grief for what I have done. I tried to kill myself but my cousin Theseus convinced me that would be cowardly and that I must find a way to atone for my sins. So, I went to Delphi and consulted the Oracle. She told me that I should go to my cousin Eurystheus, King of Tiryns and Mycenae, who would devise labors to expiate my sins.

So, I am heading there now! Will you come with me? I need someone to gather information for each task Eurystheus will assign, so I know what I will have to deal with! Are you up for the challenge?

Vice or Virtue?

[ Answer this question in the end ... after you have learned a bit more about the hero! ]

At the Crossroads...

When I was a young man, two girls approached me at a crossroads.

One of them showed me a narrow and inaccessible road full of sharp stones and thorns. Her name was Virtue. She told me that her path had trials at every turn but that I would be able to help people and fight for the good of all.

Virtue said

"You have power! You can use it for the good of all people!"

The other one showed me a wide and straight road and told me that if I went with her I would enjoy a lot of joys and fun! Her name was Vice. She told me that with her I would have whatever I wanted effortlessly but that I will not care if I wrong others and lie.

Vice said

"The power is yours! You should use it for your own good!"
