Santa Cruz repaint the whole area bc you can barely see the double yellow lines AND fix the issues where tree roots are raising the road at the bottom of graham hill and making it very dangerous sitting in the turning lane
These are great ideas. It's about time!
Make a separate turn lane from Ocean Street/Lower Graham Hill Road onto US-1 North to reduce congestion.
The left turn lane to turn onto Ocean St. Extension should be lengthened. It is too short an is obstructed but the concrete divider.
Thank you. I frequently have difficulty crossing at Jewell with my dog and am always nervous as I near the Y where people come barreling down.
Paint the Bike line green and put flat plastic risers along the bike lane edge at the bottom dog the Graham Hill Road curve like on Water near Ocean.
FYI I have traffic data on the intersection of OSt ext and Graham Hill.
The intersections described here are incredibly dangerous. I've only lived here one year and have seen one horrible accident (one car smashed BENEATH another) and many near misses.
I do not let my son walk on the sidewalks in this are, nor on ocean street ext since people speed down this street as well and there are NO SIDEWALKS. It's horrible.
The speed limit should be 15 mph down Ocean St Ext like it is in Henry Cowell. We can and should protect the deer - we can and should PROTECT PEOPLE TOO!
Install a concrete Jersey Barrier along the bike lane at the bottom of the down hill side Graham Hill Road. This would protect both pedestrians and bicyclists from vehicles crossing the bike lane or even going up onto the sidewalk.
We want a reduced speed limit and speed bumps on our beautiful walking street of Ocean Street Extension.
The Masonic park folks along with some who visit the river speed through (sometimes at 50!), and those who live on the street desperately want it to be a safe and slow street for all of our dogs and kids and adults. Please help!
I use the bike lanes on this stretch nearly every day. Scratch that, I use the bike lane heading towards Felker when leaving my house. When returning, I refuse to use the bike lane and will only ride my bike on the sidewalk. There is a small kink in the road shortly between the condos with addresses 1734 and 1732 Ocean street, which results in many cars crossing over their lane and into the bike lane. I refuse to put myself or my dog in danger of being hit by a car at that kink. Even if the lines are redrawn and more visuals are placed between the road and bike lane I will not use the bike lane.
Another area of concern is the lack of safe-feeling bike lanes on the "uphill" side of ocean st. In general, we all ride against traffic, using the bike lane on the "downhill" side, or riding on the sidewalk to avoid traffic.
This area is quite treacherous with the backup of impatient drivers wanting to get on or off highway one (when there is traffic), or the speeding drivers, as when there are fewer cars traffic goes well above the speed limit as people accelerate in anticipation of the graham hill hill, or fail to reduce their speed by the bottom of the hill.
I also ride horses on the street, and occasionally need to enter / exit ocean st ext with my truck & horse trailer. Both activities feel dangerous. There is a serious speeding issue on Ocean St Ext as well, which is a big concern as it is a rural area where so many people recreate. We have many dog walkers, pets, children playing, and people cycling, scootering, etc.
Lower speed limit on ocean street extension, speed bumps on ocean street extension.
Have a bike lane/bridge from cemetery back gate to path behind tanner, so you don't have to be on the street
Larger no parking signs on Ocean next to Claremont Terrace. The public parks and seems to be texting/making calls but they block our safe line of sight to turn left out of our complex. Larger no parking allowed sign and maybe say you are creating a dangerous situation. Amazing work - thank you.
Drivers almost never stop for pedestrians at the Jewell Street crosswalk. It does not seem that drivers have good visibility or any expectation that there may be pedestrians may be there. The Felker Street crosswalk seems more obvious and visible; however, my experience is that fewer than 50% of drivers stop for pedestrians. I think flashing lights should be installed at both of those crosswalk.
Any big safety concern is drivers passing on the right (and sometimes at high speed) through the bike lane to go around drivers waiting to turn left onto Highway 1 on-ramp heading toward Costco. And the same thing happens with drivers wanting to pass on the right via the bike lane when they get off Highway 1 and want to go down Ocean Street.
On numerous occasions I have almost been hit on my bike. Another danger: Drivers heading up Ocean Street ALWAYS drift into the bike lane at the little jog in the road where Claremont Terrace meets Villa Granada. In the past, it has been suggested the City consider putting in a three-way stop, or a traffic light, at Jewell and Ocean Street Extension
I have seen numerous accidents especially from speeding, out of control cars coming down Graham Hill Rd including hit deer, over turned cars, and several collisions with a certain power pole that has subsequently been moved to the other side of the sidewalk.
Ocean St Extension has become a very popular walk/bike route especially since the pandemic lockdown. I would ride my bike into town every day if I felt safe doing so. A protected and/or alternate route from Ocean Extension to Felker would be desirable.
Thank you for sending out this survey! We are very organized on Ocean St Extension (60+ houses) - we have a tight neighborhood organizing committee and an email list. I'm happy to support your efforts as a bicyclist, parent, driver, and active citizen!
Protect the bike lane at the bottom of Graham Hill Road with lane dividers
Stop lights?
Cement barriers between bike lane and road at base of Graham Hill Rd on Ocean St due to MANY accidents in this location and near misses with bicyclists and/or pedestrians
fwiw, In the 10+ yrs we've lived here @ OSE, we've had (at least) 6 incidents of cars careening off the curve on Graham Hill Rd above our property, and ending up downhill off the road, in the woods on either our property, or our neighbors' property (OSE).
We've often made the statement of: "What will it take for the county to install a guardrail on the curve where these cars all go off the road? Apparently a fatality is required?" Seems like the proactive thing would be to install it BEFORE the fatality, but that doesn't seem to be a priority.
In general the infrastructure between Graham Hill Rd, Ocean St & Hwy 1 seems inadequate for today's needs.
I believe the water department is going to tear up Ocean street. We should coordinate with them so we don’t duplicate the work.
The approved development at OSE (by crematorium) will amplify the traffic issue.
The cars come to fast on this road need to add speed bumps!!!
Replan the underpass section of Ocean St. (between Felker and the on-ramp to HWY 1 north) so that Ocean St. is wider and a short left-hand turning lane is possible for those turning onto the HWY 1 on-ramp. So many drivers use this shortcut from the Ocean & 17 interchange, particularly during commute times.
