Leitat has developed a microplastic sensor to detect, identify and differentiate microplastics in water. The sensor uses a laser-based detection system to detect particles in flowing water, an image acquisition system to take multiple frames of the particle and a computer to run AI algorithms to identify microplastics by differentiating them from other particles.
The sensor has been integrated into two water quality pilots within the Iliad project: 1) the OceanLab Marine Observatory of SINTEF and NTNU in Trondheim (Norway); and 2) the offshore oceanic platform from Plocan in Gran Canaria (Spain).
