The Goethe University Frankfurt am Main was founded in 1914 as a unique “citizens’ university,” financed by wealthy citizens. The University is named after Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, one of the city’s most famous natives and one of the most important creators of German-language poetry.
Nowadays, the Goethe University has more than 48,000 students, making it the third largest university in Germany. The university's research is based on six profiling research areas focusing interdisciplinary approaches in humanities, social sciences, economics, natural sciences, life sciences and medicine.
