Fall 2025 - new requirements for all San Diego Unified School District volunteers
Ocean Beach Elementary loves our volunteers! We recognize how much value our volunteers add to our campus, and we truly appreciate you. This year the SDUSD volunteer procedures will include additional steps.
There are 4 categories of volunteers, please read the document for detailed definitions and requirements.
Here’s the short version:
Category A - One time event, no unsupervised time with students (Jog-a-thon, Guest Reader, classroom presentation, etc.). No change in existing protocols.
Category B - The majority of volunteers fall under this category; working in classrooms under teacher’s direction, supporting students in a small group, etc. Existing protocols remain, new protocol includes the school site submitting their name to the Megan's law data base.
Category C - Generally volunteers from organizations, such as Oasis Tutors or student teachers.
Category D - All field trip chaperones are considered Category D, even walking field trips (OB Christmas Tree, Post Office, etc). Existing protocols remain, new protocols include being fingerprinted through Livescan and a background check. The volunteer is responsible for the Livescan fees, which are between $70-$100. Volunteer will need the Category D SDUSD Live Scan Form BCIA 8016A. Livescan will not provide the forms for you.
Volunteer Recommended Live Scan Locations (Can go to any location as long as both DOJ and FBI are done in the same transaction)
SDUSD Live Scan Volunteer Process
SDUSD Request to Conduct Volunteer Screening form
The current turnaround time for Livescan is about four weeks, with the district taking around three weeks to clear Category D volunteers and our office needing about a week to complete the in-house portion of the submission process.
Once completed, please bring in the form to the office. We will make a copy for you to take home. Please note the below regarding the process.
Livescan fingerprinting is good for all SDUSD schools.
Parents with students at multiple schools should submit a copy of their completed Livescan with the ATI# to each school. Please request more than one copy from our office once you have completed the process if this applies to you.
Fingerprint is only taken once if the parent volunteers every year (no break in volunteering). Parents will do the Request to Conduct Background Check (no cost) for the annual check from SDUSD Police Services department
