My life in a nutshell
I am Obaidul Huq Pirjada, an Attorney, running for US senate in California, which would be held on June 07, 2022. I am giving in brief an introduction of myself for favor of your sympathetic perusal. I was born at a remotest island like home of village of Ghania, Chandpur, Bangladesh. My grandfather was a great saint, Sufi, Scholar and Gold medalist of Calcutta University, India during British rule. My father was also a great scholar, educator and founder of more than two dozen Educational institutions and orphanages in different parts of Bangladesh. The homes of my village and surrounding homes of adjacent villages were detached and disconnected from each other’s during monsoon. And each home individually looked like a tiny island. People could not go to other homes without boat, during monsoon, which had hurt me much and the pain of which I had to carry all life .
My junior school education was from nearby school, which school was in my grand father’s name. I did my B.A. (Bachelor of Arts) from Jagnnath University college, Dhaka, Bangladesh, majoring in political science. Also I did my M.A. in (History) and LLB from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh, which University used to be called the Oxford of the East. I had also successfully completed 26 Units of study of law in Juris doctoral courses from the Pepperdine University School of Law, CA, USA. Study in Pepperdine had qualified me for DC Bar and some other premier Bar Examinations.
Having observed the pain and suffering of my fellow villagers, I was cherishing the desire of helping my fellow villagers when time will come. I became involved in student politics while I was a Dhaka University student. I had participated in DUCSU (Dhaka University central student Union) in the year 1980. Being a student leader I had acquaintance with some Secretaries (Minister) of the then ruling government. I had requested the then state Minister for Health Mrs Mabud Fatema Kabir to help establish a road for my fellow villagers, and she did help me by extending government help. In order to complete five miles long village road, which subsequently helped island homes to connect with each other. And the very road was then named as Ghania Montola Road. But my local MP (Parliament Member), was a corrupt person, & did not like my activities. He rather fabricated a false case against me. As a result of which I had to go to jail. Finally I became successful and helped my fellow villagers to complete my 5(five) miles long Ghania Montola Road. I became successful even-though i had to go to jail. This was the first victory of my young life before entering into law profession.
I also helped establish 6(six ) family Hospital within my Upa-Zilla(District). I became licensed to practice law in early 1983, and had joined at the Dhaka Bar Association, the largest Bar Association of Bangladesh. I became an elected member of the Executive committee in the year 1987. I was one of the highest vote getters among elected members. I became enrolled in High court of Bangladesh in 1985 and continued practice in the High court and subordinate courts. Also I had actively participated in various lawyers Movements, including the ousting of the then Autocratic ruler Ershad.
Late Advocate Shamsul Huq Chowdhury, the then president of Supreme Court Bar Association had been our leader. And we became successful in ousting Bangladeshi Dictator Ershad. I also ran for the post of president of Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association, a very prestigious position. I became involved in National politics and had sought Nomination in the parliament from one of largest political party. I was denied Nomination/ticket.
Subsequently I moved to USA in early 1993 and had started another life and struggle. I had worked hard & raised my three amazing children. I was licensed as Legal consultant by New York Supreme Court in the year 1995, but I preferred to Stay in Los Angels, CA because California has amazing people, weather and natural beauty. Above all it is the Golden State. My beloved wife Laila all a long was beside me.
My children had their early education in the best schools in Bangladesh. Subsequently they studied in California and Germany as well. Myself and wife Laila had our first priority to give them the best education as far as we can. My eldest daughter is an Engineer, having Masters degree in Engineering. My son in law, an amazing person, is also an Engineer, having Masters degree in Engineering. Now working in Excellent position in a world renowned corporation. I have also two awesome grandchildren, one is an excellent soccer player, and other is very smart and intelligent. My son had his early education from St. Joseph high school, Dhaka and Notre Dame College, Dhaka. He did Bachelor degree with honors in Economics and Finance from CSUN, CA, USA, now working as an Executive in a large corporation in USA. His spouse is an MBA from UCI, CA, Now working as an Executive in a reputable corporation. My youngest daughter is also very talented, passionate and persevering. She did B.SC. from CSUN, and is currently doing PHD in a reputable University in Germany.
I have been involved with Democratic Party politics for two decades. And I am actively engaged with Democratic party for a decade. I am a National committee member of Democratic Party since 2005 till date. Also a DCCC member for quite some time.
I believe it’s a perfect time to sacrifice my time and energy for public service, for which I have been fighting for incessantly for the last 40 plus years. I would like to say in Nobel laureate Mother Teressas words “Yesterday is gone, tomorrow has not yet come, we have only today. Let us begin“. And I have begun. Thank you all.
