Every Kid in a Park - and a Library Too! - Molly Sloan, Teacher Librarian at Portland Jewish Academy (Portland, OR)

Description: Fourth graders across the US are entitled to a free national park pass. Why not make the free pass the centerpiece of a research and history study in the library? Fourth graders at my school delve into the history of the parks using both primary and secondary sources. We examine some of the barriers of access that exist and some of the bias and racism that was built into the National Park system too. After learning about the parks, students choose a park and do independent research which gives me the opportunity to teach about choosing reliable sources, taking notes, citing sources and preparing presentations that are engaging and informative. The national parks project has become a fourth grade tradition at our school.
