Makerspace Hub

Each participant is receiving a MAILER containing FOUR fabulous Makerspace To-Go Kits + a FREE book by featured author, Dennis Mathew. They're all super simple, low-to-no-budget kits that Jen McKenzie circulated in Siuslaw School District during the 2020-21 pandemic school year. They were all prototyped to be flat and easy to mail (they were sent home in bi-weekly materials distribution on busses and/or mailed to students during distance learning). The Makerspace To-Go kits were a hit, and THOUSANDS were sent out! Siuslaw is continuing the "Take and Make" model by offering a rack of them in each library, with new kits added each week. Teachers can request class or grade level kits as well, and they can also collab to have content specific kits designed to enhance STEAM and active engagement in their classes.

Each kit in your mailer will have a QR code that you'll scan to get to the video instructions below.

Each kit is tied to conference a session, and/or they can be stand alone fun!

Conference Journal Kit + Peerless Watercolors: Sketchnoting with Lauren Suveges, 10:30-11:20 AM

  • Supplies in Kit: Interactive journal pages, recycled book pages, bookbinding thread and needle, and a Peerless watercolor palette. This interactive conference journal was TOTALLY inspired by Darren Hudgins and recreated with his enthusiastic permission! Years ago, I attended the #ipdx17 IntegratED conference, and all participants received a journal upon arrival - it was a FABULOUS balance between tactile and tech. Within its pages were prompts and questions to keep everyone engaged throughout the sessions. We've prepared a scaled back version of this experience for you with a twist: a pandemic style Makerspace To-Go kit that you'll sew together yourself. Bookbinding is such an easy go-to for library Makerspace activities, as we have a PLETHORA of old weeded books at our disposal to create with.

  • Challenge! Get super creative and freestyle/modify your journal with extra pages and funsies. Post your creation on social media (Twitter, Insta, FB and TikTok) and remember to tag @oaslibs and use the hashtag #librarylifeline2021 for all to see!

Circuitry Kit - Light up Your Journal!: Grow Library Makerspaces with Judith Guzman-Montes, 1:00-1:50 PM

  • Supplies in Kit: Basic circuit + switch template, copper tape, diode, and a coin cell battery.

  • STEAM + Circuitry Slides: Click here! I LOVE using technology as an art supply in my handmade art journals, and I teach this frequently to both students & staff. Below are slides that explain what STEAM is (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math), how to truly embed STEAM into curriculum, and I share my paper and art circuitry inspiration videos as well as a supply list.

Unicorn Puppet Kit: Tik Tok for Librarians with Kelsey Bogan, 3:00-3:50 PM

  • Supplies in Kit: Cardstock template, gold cardstock (unicorn horn!), yarn and a popsicle stick (not mentioned in video, but the cut out holes are quite small for adult size fingers, so you may wish to just tape a popsicle stick to your puppet instead).
