What is Science Olympiad?
Science Olympiad is an academic competition where teams of students compete in build, study, or lab events. On the day of the competition, students compete in 50 minute long events.
What division does Ocean Air compete in?
Ocean Air competes in Division B which is for 5th to 8th graders.
How many events are there and how many events can a student take?
There are 23 total events and students can participate in 1, 2, 3, or 4 events.
How many students are in a team?
A team consists of up to 15 students. Ocean Air typically will field 2-3 teams every year.
How much time commitment does Science Olympiad require?
The amount of time required depends on how many events a student takes. A good estimate is 3-4 hours a week for each event.
How often do students and coaches meet every week?
For each event, students and coaches meet once a week for 1.5 to 2 hours. The event coach helps determine the location and time for the meeting. Once set, the same location and time should be used for every meeting for that event.
What happens during the weekly meeting?
During the weekly meeting, coaches will teach students about a particular subject. For Forestry, the coach will teach kids about the different kinds of trees. For Wheeled vehicle, the coach will teach students on how to build a vehicle that can move a certain distance. For Crime Busters, the coach will teach students how to recognize different chemicals through experiments such as using litmus paper.
How many teams can compete in the San Diego Regional Tournament?
Typically, there are 30-50 teams that compete at the San Diego Regional Tournament and up to 6 teams from each school can compete. The top 6-10 teams advance to the State Tournament at Cal tech.
How many teams can compete in the Southern California State Tournament?
Ocean Air has made it to the State Tournament every year. There are typically about 30 schools at the State Tournament and each school that qualifies can only send one team to the Tournament.
