History of Oakington Singers

In the mid 1960’s an Oakington Village Choir was formed, and for several years performed both in Church and Chapels locally with a mix of sacred and secular programmes.

Then the Choir lapsed for a while until James Alexander became Vicar and with three members of the original village choir, started a Quartet which sang occasionally in Church and at other events.

 Gradually others joined the group and invitations to sing at events locally started to be given. At one of these events when asked by organisers, “what shall we call your group?”, Jean Williamson, one of the original Choir members instantly replied “The Oakington Singers” – and the name stuck and has been used now for over 30 years.

 The group has fluctuated in numbers over that time but presently has more than 20 regular members and the repertoire has expanded enormously, singing regularly at the main Festivals in St. Andrew’s Church, at the Oakington Village Day, in the Cambridge Grand Arcade at Christmas time for Charity, and at other events locally.
