Finnish M39 $3750 Pre Order

In 1939 the Finnish Army and Civil Guard adopted a standard rifle known as the M39. It is similar to previous models, but with improved barrel bands and a double sling swivel configuration making it suitable for all types of troops. It is easily recognized by its pistol grip stock although early stocks are "straight" like the M27, M28, and M28/30. M39s were produced by SAKO (Suojeluskuntain Ase ja Konepaja Oy) and VKT (Valtion Kirvaaritehdas) and Tikkakoski M91 barrels were also cut down to build M39s. Some SAKO rifles have the Civil Guard Sk.Y (Suojeluskuntain Yliesikunta) logo and there are also "B" barrels from Belgium although the rifles were assembled in Finland. M39s are well known for their accuracy and were produced for match shooting and training in the late '60s and early '70s.

Finnish M24 $1950 Pre Order

One of the earliest Finnish rebuilding programs was undertaken by the Civil Guard. The rifles were designated M24 and are the same basic pattern as the Russian M91. The funding for these rifles was raised by the Civil Guard Auxiliary known as the Lotta Svard and they are often known as “Lotta Rifles”. New barrels were purchased from the Swiss firm SIG and from three German firms. The SIG barrels are marked "Schweiz-Industrie Gesellschaft Neuhausen" on the right of the chamber above the woodline. The German barrels are marked "Bohler-Stahl" on the bottom of the barrel with no distinction between makers. All M24 barrels are undated and have the Civil Guard crest of an S topped with three fir sprigs in a shield on the chamber. All German barrels and the majority of Swiss barrels are heavier than the standard M91 barrel and have a "step" near the muzzle to accommodate a standard bayonet. The SIG unstepped, or "straight", barrels as pictured above are rare.

Finnish M91 $1800 Pre Order

At the time of the Russian revolution Finland was under the rule of the Tsar. When Nicholas II was deposed Finland declared its independence and defeated the Russian forces in Finland, but retained stores of arms. With an urgent need to build an army to defend itself from the real threat of Russia and many Mosins already on hand it only made sense to adopt it as the primary rifle. Between WWI and WWII Finland actively traded other types of rifles in their inventory with countries across Europe and Asia for Mosins which they had captured. The condition ranged from serviceable to “parts guns”. With an abundance of spare parts it was only natural to use them to build “new” rifles that could be put to use. From 1922 to 1924 Suomen Ampumataruikehdas made a small number of M91s marked SAT Riihimaki on the barrel shank. In 1925 Finland began production of barrels at Tikkakoski (Tikka) which were assembled into M91 configuration with dates of 1925, 1926, and 1927. The later 1926 and all 1927 barrels were a heavier type with a step near the muzzle to allow the use of the standard bayonet. During the Continuation War Finland also built many M91s with barrels made by Tikka and VKT. Barrel blanks were also purchased from Belgium but were not assembled until post war and are known as "B barrels".

The rifle pictured at the top of the page is in typical early configuration with the stepped barrel, early barrel bands and Russian stock with sling slots. The rifle pictured below is in typical late configuration with a straight barrel, late barrel bands and Finnish two piece stock with sling swivels in escutcheons with round holes. However, Finnish M91s can be found with a mix of features on rifles of any age as there were no set standards, especially during later refurbishment.

Finnish M28 $3500 In Stock

This is an excellent example of a Finnish Mosin Nagant issued to the Finnish Civil Guard, most likely in the late 1920's. The M28 was an improvement over the Mosin M81 - it featured a shortened barrel, changed depth of pitch, improved trigger, and changed stock. The M28 served the Finnish Civil Guard through WW2 and were even used to train recruits in the 1950's. This one has a nice original one-piece stock with a faint "SYT" proof in the left finger groove - the Finnish Civil guard acceptance proof. The finish is mostly intact but has turned a blue-brown patina in some areas, consistent with a combat-used gun. The barrel was made by sig. The receiver has a proper Finnish Guard "SY" marking. The serial number on the right side of the receiver was lined out, and the left side was given a new serial number. The bolt matches the new serial number. Comes with a green canvas sling and cleaning rod. Import mark on the left side of the barrel. The bore has good rifling with minor pin-pricking throughout.

Finnish M28/30 $3750 Pre Order

During the 1920s the Finnish Civil Guard looked to equip itself with a new rifle to replace the former Russian Army M91 Mosin-Nagant which it had used since Finland had gained its independence. The Finnish Army's new M27 rifle was used a basis for the Civil Guard's M28 with modifications made to make it more robust. In 1930 further changes were made - principally in the fitting of an improved rear-sight - to created the M28/30. The M28/30 was the Civil Guard's chief rifle during the Winter and Continuation wars, before being transferred to the Army when the Civil Guard was abolished under the terms of the peace treaty with the USSR

Finnish M27 $3250 Pre Order

In 1927 the Finnish Army adopted the M27 which was an entirely new design built on the Mosin action. It features a 27” heavy barrel and an overall length of 46 ľ”. Primary differences are an improved front sight with protective “ears” and a combined front barrel band and nose cap. M27s were built from 1927 to 1940 by Tikkakoski and in 1932 and 1935 at VKT (Valtion Kirvaaritehdas). Tikkakoski barrels are marked with a T in a triangle and VKT barrels are marked with VKT in a polygon. The VKT examples are rare.

L39A1 $2990

A target-shooting variant produced for military full-bore shooting teams. It was similar to the L42A1, except it was fitted with Parker Hale target tunnel front and micrometer-adjustable rear sights in lieu of the telescopic sight, and the butt did not have a sniper cheekpiece. The rifles were supplied without sights, which had to be fitted by the units to which they were issued. Some rifles are seen retrofitted with a curved pistol grip similar to the butt used on the No.8 .22 rifle. Since magazine loading was not required, the L39A1 as issued had a .303 British magazine, the follower of which served as a loading platform for single shot use, although 7.62x51mm NATO magazines are also seen fitted, as the receivers are machined to accept these. The barrel was the same hammer-forged, heavy 7.62×51mm NATO version fitted to the L42A1, fitted for a Parker-Hale type front sight band.
