The Purple Heart is one of the oldest and most distinguished military honors in the United States. Established by George Washington in 1782, it was initially known as the Badge of Military Merit. The award is given to service members who have been wounded or killed in combat. After being discontinued after the Revolutionary War, the Purple Heart was revived in 1932 by FDR through an executive order, as well as opening it up to all branches of the military. The medal symbolizes sacrifice, courage, and the resilience of those who have faced injury or death while serving their country. The Purple Heart Museum honors these sacrifices by preserving the legacy of this esteemed award and the stories of those who have received it.

Far Left: Marta, an inspiration to us all, served Eleanor Roosevelt when she would go to her own gift shop while Marta was working there! As a 1961 SUNY New Paltz Graduate, she would see Eleanor Roosevelt speak at the college's commencement ceremonies!
