Title: LEGO: Building the Future of STEM

LEGO: Building the Future of STEM How might we use the childhood favorite to harness creativity, design thinking, and STEM skills? LEGO is a versatile tool that can be easily integrated across the STEM curriculum. Learn about different LEGO program/kits as well as numerous ways to use LEGO for engineering and design. I will discuss and share LEGO Spike Prime/Essentials Robotics, LEGO Serious Play, and regular LEGO. Lastly, learn how to harness your community to accumulate your personal LEGO collection for your classroom so you can get started. This session is most relevant to K-6 teachers, however all are welcome to attend. Bring a small pile of LEGO bricks if you can.

The focus is to incorporate how modeling can be used as an effective addition to allow for student engagement and exploration in a chemistry classroom. Besides being geared towards chemistry, we plan on promoting modeling in all science fields. Our activity will be the exploding baggies. This is a chemistry investigation but can be used among various science curriculum. We want our audience to have fun with science and provide them with different modalities that can be incorporated into our classroom. This presentation is a collaboration between the Long Island Association for Chemistry Teacher Support (LIACTS) and the NYSMTP.

"The Professional School Counselor Roadmap: How We're Supporting the Future of the Profession" - This focus was created by counselors to further discuss, research, and share best practices related to School Counseling Graduate Programs, Internship/Practicum Experiences, and Mentoring Programs for New Hires.
Highly skilled School Counselors are essential in fostering the Career, Academic, and Social/Emotional Development of all students. Teaching and mentoring are crucial parts of maintaining a strong and skilled population of counselors and ensuring the health of students and schools for years to come and sustaining our profession.
What supports do we provide budding school counselors to support them for needs in 21st century schools? What gaps exist, and where do we go from here? We will be sharing some of our initial resources on an analysis of counseling programs in New York State (including programs that many of our Master Counselors work in) and what has been most effective in transitioning to school counseling careers postgraduate school.

This session will have two main purposes. First, general information will be shared regarding the principles of Permaculture and the role it plays in sustainable development. Second, attendees will be encouraged throughout the session to consider their own role in sustainable development and encouraged to consider their passions in the field of science. A student will be co-presenting in this session and will reference his own story of developing a Nonprofit called Novelty Innovations which has already donated over 20,000 educational kits across high-need areas in New York State. Attendees will be empowered to consider their own passions and the power of entrepreneurship as it relates to Marcus' vision for his venture. There will be opportunities throughout the session to learn about the science that drives this venture and the decisions that were made throughout this process that led Novelty Innovations to become the company it is today.

Full implementation of the New York State Science Learning Standards (NYSSLS) for high school biology requires a large shift in how we teach biology. For many years, we have used lecture, reinforcing worksheets, and cookbook type labs. NYSSLS demands that we change our strategies to a three dimensional model. The Illinois Biology Storylines are a complete curriculum that is fully available, free of charge, online that we use to fully implement NYSSLS. It contains all of the required elements of three dimensional learning and teaches the skills necessary for students to learn biology and succeed when taking the new NYS Biology Regents Exam.

From boxes containing the mammalian skeletal remains of the White Sided Atlantic Dolphin and a Harbor Seal to the use of an articulated skeleton and skeletal remains in the classroom; join us to gain insight on how and where these bones were acquired, the cleaning, engineering and articulation of the skeletons and the vision of the PLT to design hands-on, engaging curriculum for tie in studies like comparative anatomy, to accompany the bones that travel to K-12 classrooms.

In this workshop, NYS Master Teachers will guide you through the components of NYSSLS modeling, demonstrating how it serves as a crucial tool for young scientists to build understanding and construct meaning. Scientific modeling involves having students create representations to explain phenomena, interpret both visible and invisible processes, and make predictions. Recognizing that models are dynamic, we will explore how they can be used to reflect the evolution of student thinking.This workshop is designed for teachers at all levels, from elementary through high school.
