Accelerated sea level rise and exacerbated coastal flooding are issues of critical concern for New York City and its broader metropolitan region. With over 600 miles of densely populated coastline, this urban environment is prone to losses from weather-related natural disasters. NYC ranks in the top ten worldwide in population vulnerable to coastal flooding, and is second only to Miami in port cities with assets exposed to coastal flooding.
The coastal sea level rising come from slow Gulf streams from Antartica. In New York, the sea level is rising more rapidly than some coastal areas because as the ocean water is rising, the land is sinking.
" The thought of my home sinking sooner or later truly worries me" - Kenia Guillen a resident of Brooklyn.
The waters surrounding NYC will most likely rise around 3 feet by the year 2100, and could conceivably rise more than 6 feet in that same time period "if current plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from power plants and vehicles are curtailed."
