What is Writing?
Writing is a very important skill to have in today's world. It is one on the best ways to share your opinon with the world. It is a very broad subject with different branches that are tailored to you interests. There is creative writing, academic writing, journalism, techincal writing etc.
The New York Public Library offers several youth workshops, one of them being to The Writers Room which is designed to help aspiring writers with their writing process, giving them an opportunity for feedback which aids them on their writing journey. There are several other writing based workshops for youth of all ages, some focusing on poetry, creative writing, building narratives, and much more both online and in person. Registration is required and all workshops are free of cost.
Writopia is both an online platform that operates in several urban cities as well, including NYC, that offers free writing workshops for youths of all ages. Among their workshops are , creative writing, essays, play writing, college essays, politics and pen, sci-fi and fantasy, and several others.
NY Writers Coalition offers free workshops for all aspiring writers from New York regardless of their experience levels. These workshops are also aimed at African Americans, to help cultivate a new generation of black writers. The workshops are in 6 week segments and are online through zoom. These workshops are highly coveted and while donations are encouraged, they are not required to participate.
Coursera offers many courses on many disciplines. They have many free writing courses from accredited universities and colleges that offer college level courses for those interested in honing their writing skills.
The National Students Poet Program is designed to help students in 11-12 grade use poetry to create meaningful and impactful change throughout their communities. Five students who have been awarded a Gold or Silver medal in the Poetry category from Scholastic Art and Writing Awards are selected to participate in the year-long program. This program awards an upcoming poet with the highest honor in the nation.
NYTimes offers a fellowship is a one year program for aspiring journalists, with the goal of cultivating the next generation of news writers. The program begins in June and is eligible for anyone authorized to work in the United States. Due to covid, for the foreseeable future the program is currently remote.
