Waste Climate Action Day is coming up November 19!
Climate Action Days > Lessons & Activities
The Climate Education Leadership Team developed lesson and activity ideas for your school to choose from. These are suggestions - you can follow them exactly, or take inspiration to modify them or make your own!
Choose a schoolwide action. This is a simple action that your whole school can participate in. To implement it, it's as simple as making morning announcements and emailing your colleagues to let them know!
Select a roadmap with lessons and activities to support your schoolwide action:
Choose based on the time-commitment required: Mild (1-2 hours), Medium (3-5 hours), or Spicy (5+ hours)
Then choose a type of activity: learning, project-based actions, or advocacy
Your roadmap gives you a breakdown of steps you can take to plan and implement climate action in your school. Remember, these lessons and activities all lead up to your schoolwide action on Climate Action Day!
Is your school ready to reduce single-use plastic? All schools can encourage students to “BYO Water Bottle” as part of their Climate Action Day.
We'll count how many single-use plastic bottles we reduced citywide! Plan to estimate how many students participate so we can add it to our grand total.
Bring Your Own Reusable Water Bottle
Say No to Food Waste – start a Share Table in your cafeteria
Host a Swap – swap secondhand items like clothing or supplies
Litterless Learning Day – all educational materials are digital or fully recycled
Each Climate Action Day has it's own meaningful activity that schools can participate in to become a part of citywide impact!
For Waste, we are encouraging schools to have a bring-your-own reusable water bottle day! This aims to engage school communities in plastic waste reduction and start practicing easy ways to do so in our every day lives!
For Energy, we are encouraging schools to participate in a Lights Out Hour! This aims to reduce energy and increase awareness of our use.
For Health, Wellness, and Green Space, we are encouraging schools to participate in some Street Tree Stewardship!
For Water, we are encouraging schools to participate in a Catch Basin Cleanout! This aims to reduce litter making it's way into our sewer system, and prevent flooding on the street during rain storms.
