1. Overview and "The Short Version"

NYC CurbCue ("the App") is a mobile application designed to assist users in navigating New York City on-street parking regulations. The App functions by integrating publicly available NYC data with your device's real-time location.

Quick Summary

• No Servers or Accounts: NYC CurbCue does not operate a backend server or require user accounts. We do not store your personal data on any infrastructure we own.

• No Tracking or Ads: We do not display advertisements, collect telemetry, or build tracking profiles based on your behavior.

• On-Device Processing: Your location and voice inputs are processed locally on your device or via native Android system services.

• Trusted Third Parties: The App utilizes Google Maps and NYC public data services to function; these providers process data under their own respective policies.

• Local Control: All App settings and cached information are stored on your device and are deleted upon uninstallation.

2. Data Access and Processing Categories

NYC CurbCue is engineered to minimize data collection. The following categories describe the data accessed on your device to facilitate the App’s features.

2.1 Location Data

• What: Precise and approximate device location.

• Why: To center the map, display parking status for your current block, and provide driving or voice guidance.

• How it's handled: Location is used in real-time on the device and sent to Google Maps to render the interface. It is never transmitted to an NYC CurbCue server.

• Background Use: If background guidance is enabled, the App uses location via a foreground service with a persistent notification to provide continuous coaching. Users can identify and stop this service via the notification at any time.

• Control: Users can grant, limit, or revoke location permissions within Android Settings.

2.2 Microphone and Voice Input

• What: Audio captured during active use of voice-command features.

• Why: To enable hands-free queries such as "Can I park here?"

• How it's handled: Audio is processed by the Android system speech-recognition service (typically Google). NYC CurbCue receives only the text transcript to interpret the command; it does not store audio recordings or transmit them to its own systems.

• Control: Microphone access is off by default and can be managed in the App or Android Settings.

2.3 Address Searches

• What: Text entered into search fields and focus location data (current map center).

• Why: To provide relevant NYC address suggestions and coordinates.

• How it's handled: Queries are processed by the NYC GeoSearch service. Recent search history is cached locally on your device.

• Control: You may clear search history by deleting App data or uninstalling the App.

2.4 Device and Technical Information

• What: IP address and basic device identifiers.

• Why: Necessary for standard network requests to download public data tiles and map assets.

• How it's handled: This data is received by third-party services (Google and the City of New York) during network communication.

• Control: Standard network communication is required for core App functionality.

2.5 Locally Stored Information

The following items are stored exclusively in your device's local application storage:

• User preferences (vehicle type, theme, voice settings, sync preferences).

• Recent address searches and last known map position.

• Cached NYC public parking data (signs, meters, hydrants, street geometry).

• Status of onboarding and usage agreement acceptance.

Note on Backups: If you have enabled Android’s automatic backup feature, these app settings and local data may be backed up to your personal Google account according to Google’s terms and conditions.

3. Purpose of Data Usage

Information is processed by the App and its integrated services for the following purposes:

• Delivering core parking guidance based on location and time.

• Enabling optional features like voice commands and navigation coaching.

• Facilitating address searches and location jumps.

• Maintaining and troubleshooting App functionality.

Negative Disclosure: We do not sell your personal information, nor do we use accessed data to build advertising or tracking profiles.

4. Negative Disclosures (What We Do NOT Do)

NYC CurbCue maintains a strict privacy stance by adhering to the following:

• No Ads: We do not use advertising SDKs or display ads.

• No Accounts: We do not maintain user accounts or backend personal data storage.

• No Analytics: We do not collect first-party telemetry or usage analytics.

• No Data Sales: We do not sell or rent user information to third parties.

• No Excessive Collection: We do not collect data beyond what is required for the features you use.

5. Third-Party Service Integration

The App utilizes the following services, which are subject to their own respective privacy policies. We encourage users to review these policies:

• Google Maps Platform (Map display and location rendering): Google Privacy Policy

6. Android System Permissions

To function correctly, the App may request the following permissions:

• Location (Precise/Approximate): For parking status and navigation.

• Microphone: For optional hands-free voice commands.

• Notifications: To display status for background guidance and foreground services.

• Foreground Service: To maintain guidance while the device is in use for driving.

• Internet: To access maps and public NYC data.

Users may manage or revoke these permissions at any time through Android Settings.

7. Information Sharing and Legal Disclosures

Information is shared only in the following specific circumstances:

• Service Providers: Data is shared with Google and the City of New York strictly to provide the maps, voice recognition, and public data services as described in Sections 3 and 6 of this policy.

• Legal Reasons: Data may be shared if required to comply with applicable laws, legal processes, or valid government requests.

• Business Transfers: In the event of a merger, acquisition, or asset sale, information may be transferred subject to the protections of this policy.

8. Data Retention, Security, and Deletion

• Retention: NYC CurbCue does not retain personal data on its own servers. Data stored on your device remains until the App is uninstalled or data is manually cleared.

• Third-Party Data: Information held by third parties (e.g., Google) is governed by their respective retention policies.

• Security: The App utilizes HTTPS for encrypted network requests and relies on the inherent security architecture of the Android platform.

9. Children's Privacy

NYC CurbCue is intended for use by licensed drivers and is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children. 

10. Regional Privacy Rights

Users in the EEA, UK, and Switzerland (GDPR)

Processing is based on the performance of the service requested by the user, user consent (e.g., microphone access), and legitimate interests in operating the App. Users may withdraw consent by revoking permissions in Android Settings. For data-related requests, contact aimotioncoach@gmail.com.

Users in California (CCPA/CPRA)

We do not "sell" or "share" personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. California residents have the right to know, delete, and receive non-discriminatory treatment regarding their privacy rights.

11. International Use and Policy Changes

The App is designed for use in New York City. Users outside the United States should note that data processed by third-party services may be transferred to and processed in the U.S., where data protection laws may differ.

We may update this policy periodically. Material changes will be noted by updating the "Last updated" date and providing notice within the App or at this page.

12. Relationship to the In-App Usage Agreement

This Privacy Policy covers data handling only. NYC CurbCue also presents an in-app usage agreement / disclaimer describing that the App is an informational tool based on public data that may be incomplete or incorrect, and that you are responsible for your own parking decisions. That agreement is a separate document and is not part of this Privacy Policy.
