There is currently only one safe east-west cycling route between the Hudson and East River Greenways and through Central Park. Other routes through Central Park (the four transverse roads) are shared on narrow roads with busy traffic. Overall, the streets are not designed for micro-mobility users who want to get to the parks and rivers that are vital to physical and mental wellbeing and to safely getting elsewhere in Manhattan or other boroughs.
We want safe crosstown routes that will enable and encourage recreational and commuting cyclists and micro-mobility users to visit and pass through the Upper West and East Sides and surrounding parks. This means safe and easily recognizable smooth surfaces and directionality, and separated paths from drivers and other street users that encourage safer behavior for all.
