If I were to choose a story that would help describe who I am today, it would be this: When I was younger, I would get off the school bus every day and run straight to the mailbox in hopes of finding magazines like Vogue, InStyle, and Elle. From a very young age, I have always been interested in all things fashion. I have many notebooks filled with old sketches of clothing, shoes, and even accessories. When I began 4-H, I was most excited to bring the clothes I made to the fair. Throughout the course of my life, my family, schooling, and future goals have helped to shape all of the characteristics that make me “me”.
To start, I grew up in a family of six as the oldest child of four. This led me to become very responsible, as I was always the first one called upon to take care of my younger siblings. I have a brother, Will, who is two years younger than me, a sister, Marin, who is six years younger than me, and lastly, a brother, Grant, who is 10 years younger than me. Yes, we fight a lot, but what siblings don’t? Whenever we aren’t fighting, though, we get along well with each other.
I also grew up in the family business. There have definitely been advantages and disadvantages to this. Advantages include all of the life skills I have gained. For example, hard work ethic, communication, and respectfulness. I will forever be grateful for everything I have learned working at the family business. However, there are some disadvantages. The one thing that I have disliked about working for the family business is that I have no set work schedule. When something needs to be done, it doesn’t matter what day or time it is, it will get done. As a person who gets upset when my schedule gets thrown off, this has irritated me over the years. But, from this I have learned to stay calm in times of stress. All in all, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, and I wouldn’t wish to grow up any other way.
Next, my schooling has also helped to shape me into the person I am today. Throughout all of my years in school, kindergarten through high school, I have always been a very motivated student. I guess I could call myself a bit of a perfectionist, because if a report card ever came back with anything but all A’s, I was very upset with myself. During my high school years, I have been very involved in clubs and sports. I have participated in KAY Club, FCCLA, SADD, NHS, 4-H, Student Council. These clubs have helped me to experience new things and give back to the community. Along with clubs, I have also taken part in sports. I played volleyball, basketball, and softball my freshman and sophomore year, and volleyball and softball my junior and senior year. After sophomore year, I was able to narrow down the sports I loved and actually wanted to play.
After high school, I plan to major in Fashion Studies at Kansas State University. I wanted to go there because my parents both graduated from KSU, and they have a great fashion program. As I introduced myself before, I am a lover of all things fashion, and I don’t see myself doing anything else for the rest of my life. I do not have a set career goal, but I’m hoping as I learn more during college, I will figure that out.
Over the course of my life thus far, I have set many goals for myself. One is to open up my own online clothing store. This has been something I have wanted to do for a long time. Another is that I want to do a lot of traveling. During college, I want to apply to study abroad. I think this would be really eye opening, and I have always loved the idea of traveling.
Overall, I am excited to see what the future has in store for me. Although, I am perfectly content living in the present, and enjoying what I have right now.
