There are many types of rock climbing. At NOAC, we are currently partnering with a local, indoor climbing gym in Toledo, OH that offers 4 forms of rock climbing: bouldering, auto-belay, top rope, and lead climbing. As participants, you may have the opportunity to climb 3 of these 4 forms of rock climbing: bouldering, auto-belay, and top rope.
Rock climbing shoes: these shoes are more snug than your shoes you wear day-to-day. They are grippier and more formed to your feet allowing you to have better contact between your feet and the rocks and wall
Chalk: although not a necessity, many people use chalk on their hands to help allow for better grip when holding onto the rocks.
Harness: these are like a pair of pants you wear in order for you to be safely secured to a rope or auto-belay machine while climbing the taller walls.
Climbing rope: not every rope can be used for climbing. Climbing rope has specifications that allow it to handle the weight load and friction of a person as they are climbing the taller walls.
Belay device: with many forms and brands used by different people, the bottom line is that this mechanical equipment is used by the belayer to control a rope while belaying the climber.
Auto-belay device: this is a mechanical device that allows climbers to ascend and descend safely solo as if they were top roping as it has an auto-catching mechanism that initiates when a climber descends.
This form of rock climbing is done on short rock walls without the use of ropes or harnesses. A cushiony padding is below the climber to ensure soft landing.
This form of rock climbing is done on tall rock walls with the use of a harness and auto belay device. You're able to ascend and descend by yourself on this device.
This form of rock climbing is done on tall rock walls with the help of a belayer controlling the rope as you ascend and descend the walls. Take all the breaks you need as you climb using this method!
