About

Northwoods Women in Science got its start in 1987 and was originally formed as a chapter of AWIS - American Women in Science. The formative planning group included Sabra Anderson, Sandra Beder-Miller, Linda Cahill, Naomi Detenbeck, Kathleen Luker and Barb Sheedy. In 2011, NWIS reorganized, departed from AWIS, and became a non-profit 501(c)(4). Over the past 30+ year history, many members have accepted leadership roles and helped to form the NWIS we know and love today. NWIS continues to grow and evolve, striving to be more inclusive and responsive to community needs, and we are excited to continue supporting the next generation of womxn leaders in STEM.  

Our membership includes womxn from industry, university, agency, non-profit and private-sector divisions. Members range from undergraduate college students to retirees, with most members in early-to-mid careers. Many members reside in the Twin Ports region, across Minnesota and Wisconsin along the beautiful shores of western Lake Superior.

Membership includes an active email listserv, with information on NWIS events, relevant local events and speakers, and job and career postings. 

Members may also register their contact information in the NWIS directory. This directory is made available to all NWIS members, to facilitate networking, support and career development opportunities among members.

Dues are not required to join, but are greatly appreciated. Money collected in dues is used towards hosting events, reserving spaces, offering per diem for guest speakers, and supplementing fundraising events. 

We also offer a scholarship fund, financed by NWIS members. Scholarships are managed by the Scholarship Committee, and are offered to local K-12 educators supporting female-identifying youth in STEM.

Current committees and associated groups include Scholarship Committee and Book Club.

NWIS supports four to five leadership roles: president (or co-presidents), vice president, secretary and treasurer.
