My culture is everything about me, it consists of my past and present, and it informs my future. The continent of Africa is my homeland and the place of my ancestors. I often correct the statement that I am of African descent with, “I am African.” I have never travelled to the African Continent, yet through heritage, culture, genetics, and literature, I have a strong connection. Since I embrace the commonly accepted theory that the human race began on the continent of Africa, then all human existence is of African descent. For that reason, all of humanity is my people.
Jamaica is the country of my birth and is the place I call home. There, I was taught the importance of spirituality, family, and community. Canada is where I have spent most of my life, and thus, it is a second home-like residence.
I locate myself as an African Caribbean daughter who immigrated to Canada and became a citizen and settler on Indigenous land. I consider myself a daughter to many. I am the daughter of black and brown people, who were free before they were captured and enslaved. I am the daughter of kings, queens, freedom fighters, agitators, activists, resistors, survivors, and revolutionaries. I am a daughter who works in solidarity.
I am an African Caribbean marginalized woman without visible disabilities operating in Canada.
It is my pleasure to serve you.
