Why Organic

Why organic?

“Eating organic isn’t a trend, it’s a return to tradition.”

• Organic food s are rich in nutrients and antioxidants. They are thought to be good for heart health, they slow down aging and also prevent cancer.

• The use of natural techniques such as green manure to fertilize the lands and crop rotation in pest and disease control work absolutely well in producing safer and healthier food products.

• The dense nutritional content in organic foods are more tasty because the crops are given more time to develop and mature plus the obvious absence of toxic chemicals

• Consuming organic foods is key in boosting the immune system thereby preventing all kinds of deficiencies and chronic diseases

• eating healthy, simply means healthy people and better nourishment for a better living for both people and animals.

‘Pay for the Farmer, not the Pharma!’

Over the last few decades, our diet and lifestyle have changed radically. We now

live at a faster pace and often seem to lack time for balanced regular meals.

Organic foods often have more beneficial nutrients, such as antioxidants, mineral,

vitamins that protect us from exposure to infection and ill health as compared

to conventional crop.

What is organic food?

Organic foods are biological, natural and healthy food products that have little to no

trace of any artificial flavor, artificial colouring, synthetic pesticides or any chemical

fertilizer. It is produced with the help of farming techniques and food production

methods which promote sustainable living and environment for the present as well

as future generations.

Benefits of organic food

After getting to know what organic food is and what do we actually mean by organic;

it’s time to get acquainted with the many benefits such food products have to offer:

• In terms of nutritional values, organic foods are considered to be the best in the

market due to their rich nutritional and anti-oxidant contents.

• One can stay away from chronic diseases and deficiencies and keep their immunity

intact with the consumption of organic foods.

• Cancer, aging, and any serious heart condition can be easily tackled with the help

of organic food.

• People who are allergic to different chemicals or preservatives should rather eat organic food without any hassle.

• There is nothing in the market as fresh as organic food products which are produced

in smaller quantities and without the use of any pesticide.

• Organic foods are much tastier as they are allowed ample time to mature and

grow to their fullest potential.

Understanding GMOs

Gmo stands for ‘genetically modified organism’ and it means that any of the species/products whose genetics have been altered. Crops such as alfalfa, papaya, soybeans, canola, zucchini, etc., have GMOs. Much of the processed foods available in the market make use of GMOs.

The use of GMOs in organic food production is highly limited. For instance, GMO seeds, GMO ingredients or anything that is genetically engineered through the processes of food biotechnology cannot be used for the production of any organic product.

Ironically, genetic modification is done to safeguard the plants/animals from diseases but at times it has an unintended impact on the environment and health of animals/humans in the long run. Along with that, it has been noticed that GMOs have led to an increase in the utilization of pesticides which are again harmful to the health of the environment.

There are strict regulations in every country to regulate and restrict the use of GMOs especially in the organic food products, for example, the USDA organic regulations.

Organic vs. Non-organic food

The basic differences between organic and non-organic food are as follows:

• Organic foods make use of natural fertilizers such as manure or compost, while

non-organic foods use chemical fertilizers.

• Organic foods tackle pests with the help of natural pesticides or birds, insects etc.,

while conventional foods use synthetic pesticides.

• Tilling, crop rotation, mulching and hand weeding is done to combat the weed

issue in organic farming, whereas chemical herbicides are used in the conventional

farming methods.

Why organic food is expensive?

Organic food for sure is expensive due to the following reasons:

• Labour-intensive/manual methods of farm products are used.

• Natural pesticides, herbicides etc., used to handle the problem of pests and weeds

respectively, are also expensive.

• Getting certification of ‘organic’ is yet another pricey affair.

• Overhead costs are much more on organic farmland due to fixed costs and no

government subsidies.
