Hi, my name Is Laela Young, and I am studying at Savannah Technical College to become a future dental hygienist! I was raised in Ludowici, GA, and graduated at Long County High School in 2023 with honors. During my leisure time, I like to participate in weightlifting, volleyball, cooking, and the fine arts. My favorite, out of all of my hobbies, is drawing, making comics and animations.
I chose dental hygiene as my profession because I was inspired by my mother to enter into the medical field. My mother, who is a recent 2024 BSN graduate, always had a big heart for her patients that were in her care. She always advocated for their rights and needs in the hospital setting, as there is so much negligence and malpractice that occurs to patients, especially those of older age and color. The stories my mother would tell me after her long shifts at her job made me realize that so much change still needs to happen in the medical field. Another factor that contributed to my decision of choosing this profession is that a few of my mother's friends were dental hygienist as well and encouraged me to join the field as the profession, in their words, "would fit me so well"! I did extensive research on what dental hygiene would entail and knew that this field was perfect for me.
What I hope to accomplish with this infographic webpage is to bring awareness to the importance of taking care of, not just what is physical, but also internal. Many are not aware that oral hygiene and proper nutrition can prevent tooth loss and numerous diseases. Health starts with the mouth. In fact, signs of deficiencies or excesses of any nutrients can be detected in the mouth. This webpage will serve as a guide of how nutrition and healthy eating habits contribute to oral health, how nutrients, such as thiamin, play an important role in carbohydrate metabolism, and lastly, how to take preventative action against oral diseases.
