Dr. Bryce Nussbaum was born in Cleveland but moved to metro Atlanta when he was a kid. He earned his bachelor's degree in chemistry from Georgia Southern University in 2021 and his PhD in organic chemistry from the University of South Carolina in 2026. His graduate research focused on the synthesis and characterization of novel carborane derivatives and their applications in proton-coupled electron transfer, small molecule activation, and metal-to-ligand charge transfer. Additionally, he studied the electrophilicity of traditionally nucleophilic groups, inspiring his independent career. At Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Nussbaum is investigating the electronic effects of tuning the side groups and backbones of various N-heterocyclic phosphenium (NHP) compounds. Known for their traditionally electrophilic reactivity, NHPs are isoelectronic to the more famous NHCs. The Nussbaum Group is exploring many avenues to promote ambiphilic behavior in NHPs, with main-group catalysis as the target.
