Oysters By MUARa
Preserving a 160 Year Old Culture Through Physical Collective Action
Oysters By MUARa is a project inspired by the Tiram Putih, or scientifically known as the Crassostrea (Magallana) Saidii which is a type of oysters that can only be found in Muar, Johor. Harvesting the oysters are done traditionally until today and currently, there are only eight oyster pickers left. The oyster species is also currently being threatened due to climate change and the canalling of the Muar River. The proposed project aims to archive the dying culture of oyster picking as well as introducing an oyster hatchery to preserve the endemic species of oysters in Muar. In creating a cultivation hub of oysters, the location in placed at Parit Tiram, where oyster harvesting has been going since a 160 years ago. It focuses on creating an experience through spaces such as the a museum, oyster farm, a research centre and wet market are which has a narrative spatial arrangement, creating a curated experience for its users. The project hopes that it can act as a physical collective action to in order to sustain the ecological and cultural legacy of Muar oysters through comprehensive design strategies
