UNCOMFORTABLE HERITAGE
One of the aspects that “memory laws” have attempted to regulate over the last two decades, with varying degrees of success, is the relationship between citizens and certain spaces of memory, the dialogue established between the population and places marked by historical episodes that, through private or public actions, attempt to evoke a common memory that identifies a collective. The different meanings that these spaces have depending on the group, generation, gender, historical context and other conditions —that is, their social framework— are subject to changing processes that reveal political struggles for cultural hegemony: which memory should prevail over the others?

PERIMETER
Designed by Ricart, Henrich, Hernández, 2024. Barcelona City Council. Civic participation: Plataforma Futuro Monumento Cárcel de Mujeres de les Corts.
One of the most important topics developed on this process is the territorial expression of the disappeared prison. In 2024, we instal Corten steel pieces with phrases from testimonies of Les Corts. Exactly in the place where decades ago the walls of the provincial women's prison of the Franco regime stood, now you can read quotes referring to the situation of imprisonment and repression, of María Salvo, Tomasa Cuevas, Victoria Pujolar, Isabel Vicente, Anna Solà, Soledad Real, Mercedes Salamero, Julia Romera and Carme Claramunt.
The testimony is combined with the perimeter of the vanished prison.
